Turramurra · Ku-ring-gai
Kitchen renovations in Turramurra.
Turramurra blocks are generous and most older kitchens here face a wall instead of the garden. Turning the kitchen around to look out is the change households remember, and it usually costs less than the appliances.

Turning the kitchen towards the block.
These houses sit on land that is the best part of what they are worth, and the original kitchen almost always ignores it. Reorienting the room is the highest-value change available on a Turramurra house.
Face the garden, not the splashback
Relocating the sink to an external wall with a window over it changes how the room feels more than any finish does.
Subfloor makes it affordable
Most Turramurra houses have a crawl space. Moving the sink and dishwasher underneath costs a fraction of cutting a slab.
An island, if the width allows
You need about a metre either side to walk past comfortably. Below that an island makes a kitchen worse, not better.
Widen the opening to living
Even without removing a wall entirely, taking a doorway out to two metres transforms the connection between the two rooms.

And the units near the station.
1,329 flats and apartments by the 2021 count. Everything above about reorienting a kitchen towards the garden simply does not apply here — so here is what does.
The window is already there or it is not
You cannot add one. In a unit the kitchen orientation is fixed, so the gain comes from light, colour and joinery instead.
Consent before demolition
Written owners corporation approval of the full scope, lodged early so it runs alongside your selections.
Plan the lift booking
Old cabinets out and stone in through one route on agreed hours. It is a scheduling problem before it is a building one.
How it runs
The subfloor inspection comes first.
On a Turramurra house it decides whether the layout you want is a modest change or a structural one.
01
Look under the floor
The cheapest hour of the project. What the subfloor allows decides which layouts are affordable and which are not.
02
Engineer any opening
Widening a doorway or removing a wall needs a beam design. That drawing is a cost line and a lead time.
03
Joinery ordered early
Cabinetry goes into production before demolition so the room is out of action for weeks rather than months.
04
Services, then structure, then fit-out
Plumbing and electrical while the floor is open, beam in, then plaster, paint and cabinets.
05
Stone last, in two visits
Templated off the installed cabinets, fabricated, then returned and fitted. That gap is built into the programme.

Turramurra questions
Layout and structure.
Can we move the kitchen to the other side of the room?
On most Turramurra houses, yes. Where there is subfloor access we can run new waste and supply underneath without cutting anything, which makes a full reorientation surprisingly affordable. The constraint is fall to the existing sewer line. We check that at the first visit rather than designing around a hope.
How much room does an island actually need?
Roughly a metre of clear space on the working side, and the same on any side people walk past. Below about 900mm it stops being a benefit and starts being an obstacle, particularly with an open dishwasher door. We would rather tell you a peninsula suits your room than sell you an island that does not fit.
Do we need approval to remove the kitchen wall?
Not usually a planning approval — internal work that does not alter structure is generally exempt development in NSW. But if the wall carries load you need a structural engineer's design for the beam and its supports regardless. That is a cost and a lead time, not an obstacle, and we include it in the quote.
Can we get a window over the new sink?
Where the sink is moving to an external wall, often yes. Adding or enlarging a window changes an external elevation, which can require approval if the property is heritage-listed or in a conservation area. Parts of Turramurra are, so we check the Ku-ring-gai mapping before you commit to the layout.
How long will we be without a kitchen?
Four to six weeks on site for a straightforward replacement, longer where plumbing moves or a wall comes out. Joinery is made before demolition starts. The stone templating gap mid-job is unavoidable. We set up a temporary kitchen so the family can eat at home throughout.
Where does your kitchen face?
Send a photo from the doorway and one of the garden. That is where the conversation actually starts.
