Killara has the narrowest house-to-apartment split in Ku-ring-gai, and in the unit half the laundry is almost always a single cupboard. What goes into it is decided by whether the machines stack.
Stack, and gain the bottom half
Machines side by side use the whole cupboard for two appliances. Stacked, the lower half becomes a sink and storage.
Condenser dryer on top
No duct means no penetration through common property, and no approval argument with the owners corporation.
A pull-out bench
A slide-out board over the sink gives you a folding surface that disappears again. In 900mm that matters.

Bifolds or cavity sliders. A hinged door that fouls an open washer is the daily irritation nobody plans for.

Will a washer and dryer stack?
Most front loaders will, with the manufacturer's stacking kit — you should not simply sit one on the other. Top loaders will not stack at all, which is the single most important thing to know before buying appliances for an apartment. Check the total stacked height against your cupboard before ordering anything.
Can I fit a sink in as well?
Usually only if the machines stack. That frees the lower half of a standard 900mm cupboard for a compact trough with a little storage under it. Side by side there is almost never room. It is worth deciding this at the appliance stage rather than the joinery stage.
What about somewhere to fold?
A pull-out board over the sink or a slide-out shelf above the machines. Both give you a working surface that disappears when the doors close. In a cupboard laundry a fixed bench takes space you do not have, so a retractable one is the sensible compromise.
Does a cupboard laundry need strata approval?
Generally yes, because waterproofing and often a floor waste are involved. It is a small scope so committees usually turn it around faster than a bathroom. We prepare the written scope for the application regardless of how minor the work looks.
Our laundry has a step down. Can that go?
