Can the laundry come up from under the house?
Often, on a house with a suspended timber floor. New drainage can be run in the subfloor to reach the existing sewer connection, which is what makes it affordable. The practical question is which internal room sits close enough to that line — usually a rear hallway, an old service porch or a large linen cupboard.
What if the house is on a slab?
Then relocation is a much larger proposition, because new drainage means cutting and reinstating concrete. In that case improving the existing laundry — insulating, lining, heating and re-fitting it — is usually the better value decision, and we will say so rather than sell the bigger job.
Do we need approval to move a laundry?
Internal work that does not alter structure is generally exempt development in NSW, so usually no planning application. The drainage work must be done by a licensed plumber and notified. If the relocation involves structural change, or an external alteration on a heritage-affected property, that is different and we would flag it early.
Is the old copper room worth keeping?
As a laundry, rarely — they are usually uninsulated, poorly lit and outside the thermal envelope. As storage or a garden room they can be genuinely useful once the plumbing has moved. We would look at what the space becomes rather than simply abandoning it.
How long does relocating a laundry take?
Two to three weeks typically, against one to two for renovating in place. Two rooms are affected and the drainage is being altered, so there is more making good. It is still among the shorter projects in the house, which is why it often runs alongside a bathroom.
