NSW Treasurer’s $6.3B Help to Buy Scheme Supports 40,000 Homebuyers

Ahead of the NSW Budget on 24 June 2025, Treasurer Daniel Mookhey has unveiled the federal–state $6.3 billion Help to Buy scheme aimed at assisting 40,000 low- to middle-income households to purchase their first home. In a keynote address at the McKell Institute, Mookhey emphasised the urgent need to collaborate with the Albanese government to address NSW’s housing crisis, which he described as “punishing” for aspiring homeowners.

Key measures include:

  • Shared Equity Loans: Eligible buyers can access up to 30% of a property’s value through an equity loan, reducing mortgage size and monthly repayments.

  • Stamp Duty Relief: First-time buyers will receive stamp duty concessions on homes valued up to $800,000.

  • Zoning Reforms: Accelerated approval processes for developments near existing transport infrastructure to boost supply.

  • Social Housing Investment: An additional $1.2 billion allocated to expand affordable housing stock.

Developments such as this aim to lower entry barriers for home ownership, easing cost pressures and stimulating construction activity across the state. Homeowners and buyers are encouraged to consult Service NSW for eligibility details and application timelines.
